Rensselaer

Winter view from my apartment, the very tall building in the background, and the four somewhat shorter ones flanking it are in Empire State Plaza, across the river from me in Albany (the capital of New York) . In the past, have worked in the rightmost of the four, and the one half hidden behind Corning Tower(the tallest one). Can also see the State Capitol Building. My first PT Cruiser is also in the photo.

Me and my new PT Convertible. Taken this summer at the other end of our parking lot.
Apartments where I live
AMTRAK Station and Post Office, Rensselaer NY - about a mile or so from my apartment.  On a clear night I can hear the bells and horns, on a humid one, just beore a storm, I can hear the prime movers.
Albany riverfront, viewed from the Rensselaer side of the Hudson, beneath the Dunn Memorial Bridge which connects the two cities.
Replica of "The Half Moon", the ship used by Hendrick Hudson on his voyage of discovery up the river later named for him.
Several views of the Empire Plaza area of Albany, taken from the ridge above where I live in Rensselaer.

Troy NY

The ugly modern building barely visible on the left is Troy City Hall.  The monument in the foreground was built in 1920 and is dedicated to local residents who fought and died in the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I.

The seven story brick building behind it is the Hendrick Hudson building, named for the Dutch explorer who first sailed up the river which now bears his name.  It was originally built as a hotel, in the early '20s but now houses a sandwich shop and a Chinese restaurant on the ground floor and various offices on the upper floors.  The Attorney General's Office has the entire 5th and 6th floors, and my unit is on the 6th, in fact, my cubicle is near the center window, on the 6th floor,  just to the left of the monument in this photo.

The building on the right hand side of the photo is the Cannon building, original home of the company that still makes Cannon sheets and towels.  The buildings in the distance , up on a hill and mostly obscured by trees, are the oldest part of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, one of a number of colleges in the area.

Another shot from a slightly different angle, showing the Hendrick Hudson Building.  Note the damage to the tree on the right, major caterpillar problem here this year.

Some very interesting architecture here, the building in the photo above is the Rice Building, one of the most photographed in Troy.

Another neat piece of architecture, this one is called the McCarty Building, and was one of the first buildings in the area to use cast concrete ornamentation.  It combines that with older, iron-front details on the first two floors.   The one to the left is the orginal home of Arrow shirts, and is one many iron-front buildings on the block.

Clement Frame & Art, across the street from where I work, and where I get my Spyderco posters framed.

The abomination, Troy City Hall, talk about fugly!

This is the parking lot where they hold the Farmer's Market every Saturday from June thru November.   The building in the background, originally the Troy Electric Company, is now luxury apartments.

These last two shots  were taken "across the river" from Troy on the friday of the 4th of July weekend, after two weeks of heavy rain.    The large boat in the center is the Captain JP II, which always docks there.  The building directly behind it is the parking garage where I park for work.  Sternwheeler at the right is the Annabelle Lee, normally docked a mile north, but her dock broke loose on Thursday, and they tied her up in Troy after chasing her down river almost to Albany.   Shot below is a closer one of the bow of the Captain JP II.  Normally at this time of year, the quay almost level with the top of the upper black stripe on her hull.

One last shot, this one shows the back of City Hall.  You can see the top floors of the Rice Building on the right.  The former Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce Building, now low income apartments, is to its left, then the upper floors and roof of the Cannon Building.  The upper part of the War Memorial can be seen over the center of City Hall.  Note the height of the War Memorial, the horn gets hit by lightening at least once every thunderstorm
