Collaboration Models

Over the years, Spyderco has collaborated with a number of custom knifemakers to produce knives that bear both the distinctive "signature" of the artist and the unmistakable marks of a Spyderco.   Below are some of these models.

   Above - Top to Bottom
JD Smith - Black Micarta with single liner on clip side
C27 Jess Horn - the only Spyderco without a round hole!
C34 Jess Horn II - black micarta
C38 Jess Horn Lightweight - black FRN - pattern on handle is JESS HORN repeated endlessly
"Baby Horn" - this one in white micarta, produced exclusively for AG Russell
NOTE:  all the Jess Horn variants can be seen on the Jess Horn Page

Above - Various versions of the Wayne Goddard - Top to Bottom
C16- Large Goddard combo edge in black micarta
C16 "Sprint Run" Grey FRN Large Goddard plain edge
C16 - Original black FRN Large Goddard plain edge
C18 - Goddard Junior - have been told this is "green" micarta this one a rare plain edge
C20 - Baby Goddard - again supposedly "green" micarta - combo edge

Above - Another version of the C16 Wayne Goddard - this one in serrated edge

Above - Still another version of the C16 Wayne Goddard - this one started life as a combo edge Burgundy  FRN and was customized by Steve Rice (STR on the forums) with titanium handles.   I was high bidder on this one in a USN "good cause" auction.  Originally set up by Steve for tip up RH carry, he was kind enough to convert it to tip down LH carry and anodize it for me.

C63 - James Keating Chinook II - G10 handles over dual steel liners

Above (top to bottom) 3  Ed Schempp designs.  All feature black micarta scales, stainless bolsters, VG10 blades,  and dual steel liners
C102 - Folding Kris
C83 - Persian Folder
C83 - 75mm Persian

Above: The new C97 Howard Viele Jr.  VG-10 blade, left side is black linen micarta over brushed stainless steel, right side is G10.  An extremely nice little gents knife, with excellent fit and finish, but, as you can see from the photos below, very right hand biased.

Below, the latest collaboration as of April 2005 - the C96 Spyker - This knife is the first ever Spyderco three way collaboration, it combines a design by Ken Onion, some features common to many Kershaw knives and some uniquely Spyderco touches.  Interesting piece, and quite possibly the most lefty friendly liner lock ever.

Another collaboration model that came out in November 2005, the Adventura.  Designed by one of the Alexandru Diaconescu of Romania, better known on the forums as Dialex.

Tim Wegner Designs

Two prototyopes, and the PE and CE verision of the production model of the Ocelot - this knife holds the current record for the longest gestation period of any Spyderco, athough the Szabofly seems to be threating to become a contender for that title.  Note that the Ocelot is not a "collaboration model" in the same sense as the others.  Tim Wegner sold this design outright to Spyderco, then took some actions that might be considered rather underhanded.

Below - Top to Bottom:
"Unofficial" green FRN / BG42 compression lock prototype, as shown above.
"Official" green G-10 / BG42 compression lock prototype.
Production black G-10 / VG10 front lock in plain edge
Production black G-10 / VG10 front lock in part serrated edge

"Unofficial" Wegner Trakker/Ocelot Prototype

Blade is BG-42, and is unmarked except for the steel desigantion and Tim Wegner's mark, with grooves cut in both the thumb ramp and choil.   Although the clip mount and contouring of the FRN make it difficult to see, the pivot is adjustable.  I have a strong suspicion that some of the parts used in this knife were stolen from Spyderco.  I questioned Sal regarding this knife at the NYCKS in 2004 and he said it definitely  was not made by Spyderco.  It is likely that it was built by an employee who left Spyderco to work for Tim Wegner's company, Blade-Tech.  At the very least it represents unauthorized use of  both the round hole opening device and the compression lock.  At worst, it was built on "company time" with company supplies.  Aside from the blade markings, both the blade and lock look suspiciously like (read identical to) the "official" G-10 handled prototypes.   For the record, I offered to give the knife to Sal.

Handles are green FRN, contoured in a manner similar to the Native III.  The "tracks" appear to be molded into it, rather than cut, as they are on the G10 "Ocelot" versions of this design.

Construction is dual liners and open frame with steel spacers and lanyard tube.  The stop pin for the nested compression lock serves dual duty as one of the spacers.   Handles and liners are both drilled and tapped to allow tip down clip mounting for either right or left hand carry.
